PTI Quick Poll Results: 2014 Local Government Enterprise-Wide Cyber Security Survey

PTI Staff Contact:  Dale Bowen, Deputy Executive Director for Program Development, 202-626-2456.

Cyber-Security ranked as the number one technology priority among local government officials in three recent, national surveys conducted by PTI. This focus on cyber security coupled with several recent and serious security and data breaches led PTI to conduct a quick poll of city and county information technology officials. This quick poll examined the current state of enterprise-wide cyber security programming. PTI conducted this quick poll the week of May 12, 2014 and the results are shared below.

Cyber-Security Planning
56% of respondents to the quick poll DO NOT currently have an enterprise-wide cyber security plan. For these respondents, the resources most needed to create such a plan are:

  • Human capital resources (85%)
  • Financial resources (77%)
  • Leadership support (54%)
  • Technical expertise (39%)

Cyber Breach Response Planning
67% of respondents DO NOT have a formal Cyber Breach Response Plan.

Local governments will always be at risk when it comes to cyber-security, whether these risks are external or internal. Staying current on threats, vulnerabilities and breaches, and communicating these threats to staff throughout the enterprise is vital. PTI also believes it is important to raise the profile of cyber-security amongst executives and leadership.

To this end, PTI will be developing webinars to help local governments understand the risk, showcase local governments that are ahead of the curve in plan development and dissemination and break down the elements of a good cyber security plan.

Stay tuned to for upcoming webinars that you will definitely want to be a part of!
