Technology Priorities of City Law Enforcement Agencies

Over the summer of 2018, the Public Technology Institute conducted the fourth annual Law Enforcement Technology Priorities national survey. The intent of the survey is to develop a better understanding of the technology operational and management issues within local government law enforcement agencies.

This survey was sent to law enforcement executives in cities and counties throughout the U.S. The insight and experiences that these officials shared provide a picture of how technology is being used in local law enforcement. The survey was wide ranging in scope: Questions looked at agency size and staffing levels, priority projects and initiatives, the use of body-worn cameras, Next Generation 911 and data sharing and communications, and budget and spending on technology.

For this 2018 survey, PTI wanted to present the results from several of the survey questions in an easy to view format, rather than just present graphs or tables of numbers. PTI also wanted to provide a view of county trends and a separate view of city trends. There are many similarities between city and county respondents; the major differences being technology priorities and how IT development is handled within law enforcement agencies.
