Local Governments and the State of Cloud Computing

PTI hosted this webinar on April 28, 2010.

Forty-five percent of responding local governments are currently using cloud computing (hosted services across the Internet) to maintain applications or provide services, according to a PTI survey. Nineteen percent plan to use cloud computing services within the next 12 months, while 35% have no plans to move to “the cloud.”

Cloud computing has generated a great deal of interest among IT executives. Market-research firm IDC expects IT cloud-services spending to grow from about $16 billion in 2008 to about $42 billion by 2012.

PTI conducted its survey in April 2010 to identify how cities and counties are using the cloud to manage and provide IT applications and to identify any issues or concerns to local government IT executives.

The survey was conducted online between April 1 and April 16, 2010. Eight-hundred thirty local government IT executives from across the country were invited to participate in the survey. Ninety-three recipients completed the survey for a response rate of 11%.

PTI members have access to detailed, verbal responses to the survey at this link.
