NYC Housing Authority Named a PTI Innovation Lab

November 12, 2008—Public Technology Institute (PTI) has recognized the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) as an Innovation Lab for its Broadband over Power Line (BPL) in-building network proof of concept.
PTI is a national, non-profit technology research and development organization created by and for cities and counties. Its Innovation Lab program – a “mark of excellence” - recognizes a local government for the successful deployment of a technology solution or practice.
NYCHA evaluated BPL technology and developed a business plan to provide a cost-effective solution to replace legacy building door control and intercom systems (which currently cannot support multifunction communication and broadband for high-speed Internet connectivity) and to upgrade the security cameras in the agency’s housing developments to a BPL-based system.
As an Innovation Lab, NYCHA will share information on the project and serve as a resource for government officials interested in leveraging existing building power line infrastructure to enable:
- Smart building technology such as remote asset and temperature monitoring;
- Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) including intercom services;
- CCTV/video surveillance; and
- High-speed Internet for residents.
