How GIS Aids Local Government and First Responders in Crises

Geospatial SystemsA new guide illustrates how local government and utility first responders are using geospatial information in large-scale emergencies.

Published by PTI and the Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA), Geospatial Systems That Support Emergency and Disaster Operations: A Case Study Guide for Local Government and Utility First Responders contains case studies from nine local governments that highlight how geospatial-based systems and data allow first responders to easily and reliably access critical information pre-incident, on-route and on-scene, and:

  • How these systems are used to rapidly access information in central databases, or from a variety of remote sensing systems for transmission to the field in support of emergency operations;
  • How these systems support the collection of information by first responders at the incident scene in ways that allow it to be rapidly transmitted to operations centers for assembly, analysis and distribution to the response community, as well as post-event analysis; and
  • How support systems permit first responders from different organizations to stay in touch with one another and to coordinate their field activities.

2007-2008 Technology Solutions Awards: GIS

2007-2008 Sustainability Solutions2007-2008 Technology Solutions Awards: Geospatial Information Systems provides examples of how several PTI member local governments are employing GIS technology.

Each example describes the problem or issue the local government needed to solve, details of how it addressed the problem, and the results of that solution or implementation.

These projects were submitted in the PTI 2007-2008 Technology Solutions Award competition. This annual program recognizes PTI members that have demonstrated how, through the use of technology, government has improved community services, improved internal operations or reduced costs.

Using GIS to Support Emergency Management and Homeland Security

Using GISUsing GIS to Support Emergency Management and Homeland Security is a guidebook for public safety and IT managers in local governments.

The First Edition was released in the fall of 2005, just after hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated much of the southeastern portion of the U.S.

Since then, much has been learned about the role Geospatial (or Geographic) Information Systems (GIS) technology can play in emergency preparedness efforts and disaster response.

This Second Edition will help local officials find ways to build proactive, collaborative approaches between agencies responsible for emergency management, and those that collect and maintain geospatial data.

Exploring the Synergy between GIS and Web Services

SynergyGISWebExploring the Synergy between GIS and Web Services looks at the many different GIS applications that local governments are providing via their Web sites.

"With this publication, PTI hopes to show local officials how, by taking advantage of their investment in GIS technology and applications, and by making these GIS-based services available to the community via the web, city and county governments are providing a powerful resource to the public," according to PTI Executive Director Alan Shark.

The Location Aware Enterprise

Location Aware EnterpriseA Practical Guide toward the Establishment of the Location Aware Enterprise provides an overview of how GIS data and technology can be used more effectively within the local government organization. It provides case study examples of enterprise-based geospatial operations in several PTI member local governments.
