Santa Clara County GIS Court Decision

The efforts of Santa Clara County, CA to charge high fees for public access to its GIS basemap culminated in a court-ordered, $500,000 payment to a citizens’ organization that sued the county.

Montgomery County, MD Named a PTI Innovation Lab

April 23, 2009—Public Technology Institute (PTI) has named Montgomery County, Maryland an Innovation Lab for the county’s implementation of configuration management practices in a geographic information systems (GIS) environment.

PTI’s Innovation Lab program - a “mark of excellence” - recognizes a local government for the successful deployment of a technology solution or practice.

2007-2008 Sustainability Solutions2007-2008 Technology Solutions Awards: Geospatial Information Systems provides examples of how several PTI member local governments are employing GIS technology.

Each example describes the problem or issue the local government needed to solve, details of how it addressed the problem, and the results of that solution or implementation.

These projects were submitted in the PTI 2007-2008 Technology Solutions Award competition. This annual program recognizes PTI members that have demonstrated how, through the use of technology, government has improved community services, improved internal operations or reduced costs.

Local government advocates for enterprise geographic information systems (E-GIS) are often vigorously challenged by budget managers and elected officials to justify their proposals.

Faced with the demand to document benefits, proponents seeking to quantify or estimate E-GIS benefits can have a difficult time coming up with reliable and convincing numbers.
