Applications of Business Analytics in Local Government

We all have been observing a large increase in the number of cities and counties that are interested in using data to drive better decisions.

A number of groups, practitioners and communities use differing descriptions of this idea, or similar ideas, including “smart cities”, business intelligence, performance measures, performance based budgeting, business analytics, predictive data modeling, etc.

Fundamentally, all these emerging areas are rooted in the same thing – technology is capturing lots of data now, and managers want to use it.

Inaugural PTI GIS Vision Award Goes to Five Officials for Their Efforts in Super Storm Sandy

May 10, 2013, Alexandria, VA – Five public-sector employees, representing five different agencies, who acted as a team and managed to successfully cross boundaries at all levels of government to better serve and protect the public during and after Super Storm Sandy have been named recipients of the inaugural PTI GIS Vision Award.

Super Storm Sandy brought out the very best of public officials trying to plan for, respond to, and recover from all aspects of the devastating storm. The use of geospatial systems across all levels of government in the New York and New Jersey area played a vital role in these response and recovery efforts.

Building Collaboration: CPO-CIO Relationship Survey

National survey results show that the relationship between local government chief procurement officers and chief information officers is strategic and effective, but more can be done to enhance and improve this vital relationship.

Approximately 53% of local government Chief Procurement Officers (CPOs) and Chief Information Officers (CIOs) believe that the relationship between the CPO and the CIO is highly strategic, while 30% believe the relationship is somewhat strategic according to the results of a national survey conducted by the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing, Inc. (NIGP), the Public Procurement Research Center (PPRC) and Public Technology Institute.

Public Technology Institute and Deltek now offer an online procurement intelligence (PI) database as a benefit for PTI local government members.

It contains more than 800,000 local and state government purchasing opportunities, including RFPs, RFQs and supporting documentation; local and state budget and spending data, along with detailed contact and status information. It is continuously updated with information from Deltek’s GovWin IQ offering.
