The annual PTI Tech Savvy Designation Award Program recognizes PTI member local governments and state agencies that meet a list of criterions where technology is used to address issues, current challenges and future opportunities.

For member local governments, this is a jurisdiction-wide designation, not an individual department award. Designation as a PTI Tech Savvy Local Government recognizes any sized local government for exceptional talent, great ideas, teamwork, leadership and technology best practices and brings these to the attention of peers, elected officials and the world of local governments.

For member state governments, this is a single agency designation. Designation as a PTI Tech Savvy State Agency recognizes any state agency for exceptional talent, great ideas, teamwork, leadership and technology best practices and brings these to the attention of peers, elected officials and other agencies within and outside the state.

Local Government Energy/Environment Technology Priorities for 2015

Funding/grant opportunities, aging infrastructure, water and disaster mitigation and preparedness are the top priorities for local energy/environmental/sustainability and technology government officials, according to a recent nationwide survey conducted by PTI.

This survey, conducted in April 2015 on behalf of the PTI Energy and Environment Council, included responses from energy, environment, public works, sustainability and facilities officials from cities and counties, large, medium and small across the U.S. representing over 40 million people.

For the fifth year, the Local Government CIO Summit is co-locating with the National Association of State CIO’s (NASCIO) Annual Conference. In addition to a robust PTI CIO Summit Agenda, there will be a number of joint local/state activities.

Presenting the Citizen-Engaged Communities for 2014–2016

Public Technology Institute (PTI) is pleased to announce the city and county governments designated as Citizen-Engaged Communities for 2014–2016.

The list is based on interviews that PTI conducted with government IT executives as well as representatives of the technology vendor community who work with state, city and county governments.

Cybersecurity Ranks as #1 Technology Priority for Cities and Counties in 2015

For the second year in a row, cybersecurity ranks as the top technology priority for local government technology executives, according to a recent survey conducted by Public Technology Institute (PTI).

The second highest ranking priority will come as no surprise – budget and cost control. Local governments are still climbing out of difficult budgetary times and budgets and cost controls are ever presence in planning discussions.

The third priority selected by IT executives is disaster recovery/business continuity followed closely by strategic technology planning.

IT executives were provided with a list of fourteen technology topics and asked to rank the topics in order of importance.

Below, PTI lists the top ten technology priorities, based on this survey, for 2015.

Frustrations and Challenges of the Local Government IT Executive: 2015 PTI National Survey Results

The lack of funding ranked as the number one issue frustrating local government technology executives, according to the results of a national survey conducted by PTI and the Center for Technology Leadership. The feeling that top management does not really understand IT placed second, and the sense of frustration with the public’s general attitude towards government placed third.

The intent of the survey was to identify the technology challenges that local government IT executives face on a daily basis and to understand the professional skill sets that IT executives need to develop and to maintain to be successful.

State of City and County IT 2014: The IT Organization and Operations National Survey Results

PTI presents this executive summary that outlines the results of the State of City and County IT 2014: The IT Organization and Operations national survey.

This is the seventh year that PTI and Deltek, a PTI research partner, have conducted this survey. In July and August, 2014 local government technology executives representing cities and counties of all sizes were asked to respond to the survey. Three hundred and forty-five executives completed all, or part of the survey.
